Matching your chess board with suitable chess pieces depends on the square size, which determines the appropriate size for the chess pieces and vice versa.

When you choose a chess board and pieces with the same size number, you can be sure they fit together perfectly.

For home use, while maintaining FIDE standards, size No. 5 is likely your best choice. It balances the authenticity of a tournament setup with the practicality of a home environment.

This size is large enough to feel luxurious and professional, yet still fits comfortably in most homes without taking up too much space.

If space and a more authentic tournament experience aren't an issue, size No. 6 is an excellent choice.

CHESS PIECES

Most professional players prefer Staunton-style chess pieces, which are available in both wood and plastic.

If you travel south on vacation, you may also encounter games with stone pieces, but these are primarily decorative and rarely used in tournaments or similar situations.

CHESS NOTATION / COORDINATES
