Do you want to experience the feel of playing with the very chess pieces that Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky used to decide the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik in 1972?
Known as the "Match of the Century," this highly anticipated showdown was played at Fischer's insistence with high-quality Staunton chess pieces, hand-crafted by Jaques of London, an English maker of exceptional chess sets.
The world's two top-ranked players faced off in a tense Cold War atmosphere. The Soviet reign had lasted 24 years, and the stakes were higher than ever. The match was postponed several times, with uncertainty about whether it would take place at all.
Fischer skipped the opening ceremony of the championship. Having dominated the Candidates Tournament with unprecedented victories, he finally arrived in Iceland as the favorite. He had to win outright, as a draw after the 24-game series would allow the reigning champion, Spassky, to retain his title.
The global audience was shocked when Fischer lost the first game and refused to play the second in front of cameras, handing Spassky a forfeit victory. Yet the series continued, with Fischer surprising Spassky by using a different opening almost every game. Fischer ultimately secured the world championship with a score of 12½-8½, cementing his place as a living legend in chess.
All with these very chess pieces.
